Application: Life Support Technician

The Oklahoma City Zoological Park & Botanical Garden is a fully accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the American Association of Museums. The Oklahoma City Zoological Park & Botanical Garden is seeking an enthusiastic and progressive leader to join the animal care team to maintain the welfare of the Zoo’s assigned animal collection and its environment through the implementation of departmental activities and staff training. The ideal candidate must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff at all levels and possess excellent communication and organizational skills to function effectively in a team environment.

The Life Support Technician interacts with the public and enhances visitor experiences. Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Curator, this position performs a variety of skilled/semi-skilled work required for the care and safety of animals, staff, and the public.  This position has the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform all operational requirements in the assigned area responsibilities as directed by the Assistant Curator and/or Curator.

Essential Duties

  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to perform all functions that pertain to Life Support Technician.

  • Assists with Animal Transfers.

  • Participates in Conservation activities that support’s the zoo’s mission.

  • Demonstrates leadership through example, fully supporting Oklahoma City Zoo’s strategic management plans and working with Life Support Technicians, Senior Life Support Technicians, Animal Caretakers and Senior Animal Caretakers to support these plans.

  • Assists with supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the Assistant Curator.

  • Represent Oklahoma City Zoo by participating in AZA programs, TAGs, SSPs, Studbooks, etc.

  • Responsible for maintaining the highest level of safety in the workplace through staff training and implementation of safety protocols and procedures.

  • Participates and coordinates maintenance, marketing events, Guest Service needs, education, horticulture or other departmental needs as appropriate.

  • Assists Assistant Curator in facilitating exhibit needs and maintenance of assigned area.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5 years of experience working with Life Support in a zoological or aquarium setting.

  • SCUBA certification from a nationally recognized organization.

  • Aquatic Animal Life Support Operator 1 license or equivalent.

  • Demonstrated proficiency operating ozone and automated control systems.

  • OR, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed in this job description.

  • Ability to pass annual TB tests.
