The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden has been a favorite birthday party destination for decades. With a variety of locations for gatherings throughout the OKC Zoo and options for groups of almost any size, it’s a wild place to celebrate with friends and family. And now, the goal is to make these celebrations zero waste events.
Plates, cups and flatware at the Zoo’s birthday parties are now made completely of compostable materials. Eventually, these biodegradable materials will be turned into ZooPoo compost and used on the Zoo’s gardens and grounds to help plants grow.
As part of the Zoo’s ongoing conservation mission, one of the organization’s long-term goals is to make every event held on-grounds zero waste. Working closely with ZOOfriends and the Zoo’s food and beverage partner Lancer Hospitality, this year’s Safari Soiree will be a zero waste event. In addition to going zero waste for birthday parties and other events, the Zoo is planning to replace lorikeet nectar cups with a compostable alternative in the near future.
Birthday party packages include admission and access to the Zoo for up to 30 guests, plus a birthday party room for up to two hours. For an additional fee, an education representative will bring two animal ambassadors to the birthday party. Catering options are also available. Updated conservation policies and practices originate from the Zoo’s Conservation & Green Practices Committee, which is composed of members from almost every department and employment level. The committee meets monthly to monitor ongoing conservation efforts, collect new ideas, discuss best practices from other AZA-accredited institutions and more.
