The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Gardens is partnering with Okies for Monarchs to present Monarch Meetup, a community education event, on Tuesday, March 13 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hideaway Pizza in Norman.
Dr. Rebecca Snyder, OKC Zoo Curator and Oklahoma Monarch & Pollinator Collaborative member, will provide information about the critical role pollinators play in maintaining healthy ecosystems and explain how all Oklahomans can join the statewide effort to increase habitat for monarchs and other pollinators.
Nearly 75 percent of the world's crops require pollination. Pollinator populations, including monarchs, have declined dramatically in recent years. Oklahoma lies within the migratory path of the monarch butterfly and provides vital habitat.
This free education series is open to everyone and is a casual come and go social. Other local experts will also be available to discuss how to plant and maintain your own monarch/pollinator garden.
Okies for Monarchs will have free seed packets for attendees, as well as answers to butterfly-related questions. The group is part of an initiative of the Oklahoma Monarch & Pollinator Collaborative, a statewide group of 40+ organizations and citizens working together to ensure thriving Monarch migrations for generations to come.
Hideaway Pizza is joining efforts to save the monarch butterfly, and other pollinators including the honey bee, with the seasonal release of its honey-drizzled specialty pizza The Pollinator. Through May 14, Hideaway will donate 10 percent of proceeds from sales of The Pollinator to support “Okies for Monarchs,” an initiative of the Oklahoma Monarch & Pollinator Collaborative, a statewide group of more than 40 organizations working together to protect and enhance suitable habitat for pollinators in Oklahoma. The Pollinator is available at all 18 Hideaway Pizza locations in Oklahoma and Arkansas.
Norman’s Hideaway Pizza is located at 577 Buchanan Ave. The following Monarch Meetup will take place Tuesday, April 10 at Hideaway Pizza in Yukon, at 1701 Shedeck Pkwy. Interested in going? Let us know…
