Let’s stand together for giraffes. Visit the Oklahoma City Zoo on Thursday, June 21 to participate in World Giraffe Day presented by Bob Moore Subaru. This worldwide celebration is an annual event initiated by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation to raise support, create awareness and bring attention to the challenges giraffes face in the wild. On June 21, Zoo guests will have an opportunity participate in event activities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that focus on giraffe and habitat conservation. Talk with animal and conservation experts to learn what the Zoo is doing to protect giraffes and how you can also help:

  • Become a ZOOfriends member. Money generated from membership sales is used to support the OKC Zoo’s legacy conservation partners, including Northern Rangelands Trust.
  • Answer “Yes” when asked to Round Up for Conservation while making purchases at the OKC Zoo. Round Up funds were used to pay travel costs for Zoo staff to help with a census of reticulated giraffes in Kenya.
  • Buy Northern Rangelands Trust jewelry sold in the Zoo’s Safari Gift Shop. These items are handmade by women in the conservancies who receive the proceeds. This diversifies family income, reducing reliance on livestock.

In the last 30 years, wild giraffe populations have declined by 40 percent due to habitat destruction and poaching. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) recognized that giraffes were in need of conservation action and created the Giraffe SAFE (Saving Animals from Extinction) program in 2017. This year, the OKC Zoo joined 15 other AZA members to become a Giraffe SAFE partner. Giraffe SAFE partners commit to providing annual financial support for giraffe conservation programs in Africa and promote public awareness about the plight of wild giraffes. World Giraffe Day activities are free with Zoo admission. To learn more, call (405) 425-0262 or visit
