OKLAHOMA CITY ZOO STAFF RESPONDS TO SMOKE ALARM AT GREAT ESCAPE HABITAT

Oklahoma City Zoo animal care and security teams along with the Oklahoma City Fire Department responded to a fire alarm within the OKC Zoo’s Great EscApe primate habitat around 7:45 p.m. this evening Tuesday, March 6. Firefighters and Zoo team members identified the source of smoke as smoldering dust that had accumulated in a ventilation duct in the ceiling of the habitat, away from all primates. Staff speculate that the smoke may have been caused by a spark from a welding repair done earlier in the afternoon. All primates within the habitat are doing fine and will be closely monitored by the animal care and veterinary team.

OKC Zoo’s Great EscApe was built in 1993 and is home to the Zoo’s great apes including Western lowland gorillas, chimpanzees and Sumatran orangutans, all of which are critically endangered.
