Homeschool Q&A

OKC Zoo Home School Frequently Asked Questions

What will my child do during the class?

Classes vary somewhat in structure, but all include the science/conservation lesson, animal encounters, and time in the Zoo.

Who teaches the classes?

The classes are taught by Naturalist Instructors who are employed by the Zoo and have extensive knowledge in science/conversation and animals.

How old does my child have to be attend class?

Your child must be 4 years of age to attend classes.

If my children fall into different grade levels, can I register them for the same class?

To maximize individual learning experiences, we ask that you register your children in their correct grade range, as programs meet the needs of specified age groups. We must adhere strictly to these groupings to ensure that your child’s program is a positive experience.

May siblings observe and/or participate in classes?

Our classes have limited space for the student and one adult, although the adult is not required to stay. Therefore, no siblings please.

May teachers/chaperones observe and/or participate in classes?

Teachers may observe, however, limited to one adult per class. Also, our classes are designed for children to successfully participate in group-oriented programs without teacher/chaperone involvement.

Is Zoo admission included in the cost of the class?

Zoo admission is included in the cost of the class. However, admission is only for the student(s) and one parent.

What about Zoo admission for non-registered siblings and additional adults?

We have two options available for those families who would like to stay near by while your student(s) attends class:

  • Option 1: Families (additional siblings and adults) can enjoy the Education’s backyard play area, which is covered. We ask that children not be left unattended.
  • Option 2: Visit the Zoo during your students class. Please note regular Zoo admission applies and guests must enter through the Zoo’s main entrance.
Where are the classes held?

Classes are held in the Rosser Conservation Education Center – located at the east end of the Zoo’s parking lot.

Do I have to register for every class in a semester?

No, you do not have to register for an entire semester, as we know your schedule needs to be flexible. Thus you have the option to register based upon your preference. Please note that our classes do fill up quickly so the sooner you enroll the better!

What are the benefits of attending Home School at the Zoo?
