Conservation Projects

Volunteers participating in conservation projects have the opportunity to support our Conservation and Science team in a variety of ways. After joining the program as a Zoo Host, individuals may elect to complete additional training requirements to assist with scientific studies, data collection, animal enrichment, themed animal conservation events, and more.  


Based on the diverse array of studies, projects, and events hosted at the Zoo, duties will vary by assignment but may include

  • Answering guest questions about directions, exhibits, attractions, and amenities
  • Guiding guests through conservation themed activities
  • Communicating with guests about the conservation initiatives at the Zoo
  • Collecting data on animal behavior, on our exhibits, or other data
  • Assisting with animal enrichment preparation


  • Must be 16 years of age or older
  • Completion of volunteer application, orientation, and training
  • Completion of additional trainings for conservation projects
  • Approved through screening process, including background check and interview
  • Ability to tolerate reasonable weather conditions
  • Ability to walk or self-transport throughout the zoo
  • Confidence when communicating
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
